“The day of the Lord is coming; it is near, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness!”
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
If you were out in the desert and saw this storm coming, what would you think?
When is a time that darkness and gloom might actually be a good thing?
Usually when we think of God coming to us, we might think of triumphant music, clashing symbols, and brights lights. But in this passage from the Old Testament, we hear an announcement of darkness, gloom, and clouds. That seems strange and maybe even a little scary.
But in the full story of God coming to us in Jesus, there was a lot of darkness. Why? Because there is a lot of darkness in our hearts! During Lent, we take some time to think about that darkness in our hearts and in the world around us. We talk to God about that and we ask him to bring us light and hope. Then when we hear the trumpets of Easter, we know that good news—the very best news—is coming to us directly from God.
