Psalm 118: 1-2
O give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his steadfast love endures forever! Let Israel say, "His steadfast love endures forever."
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
What is happening in the image?
Why is there a hand waving a branch?
The passage says to give thanks to the Lord because his love endures (lasts) forever.
In your own words, describe what it would mean for love to last forever.
This week we celebrate Palm Sunday, which means a couple things. First, it’s a day of celebration where we get to say “Hosannah in the highest! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” We remember all the people who were excited when Jesus came riding into Jerusalem. They thought he was going to become their earthly king.
Unfortunately, we also remember that between now and next Sunday (Easter), there are some dark days ahead. And this can be really hard to understand. Why are we praising Jesus today when we know that those people are going to betray him and kill him in a few days? When ALL OUR SIN is going to send him to the cross?
It might help to focus on the words from today’s passage: “his steadfast love endures forever.” The passage even says it twice. We don’t know how it all works, but we can know this: between now and next week, God’s steadfast love will not go anywhere. It is strong and safe. And in the future, too, it will go on being strong and safe no matter how many times we betray him or how many dark days there are.
